Johann David Spurling

I am a full-time Maths tutor with over four years of dedicated experience, specializing in online tutoring. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of students, and I adapt my approach to meet the unique needs of each one. I believe everyone learns differently, and my focus is on finding the best way to support individual understanding.

Teaching runs deep in my family. My aunt is an HMI (Her Majesty’s Inspector), and both of my grandparents were teachers. My grandfather always reminded me that “there are no bad students, only ineffective teaching.” I embrace this philosophy, aiming to positively impact each student I work with.

I am currently pursuing a degree in Computing with Mathematics through the Open University, building on the foundation of my GCSEs and A-levels. I am thoroughly familiar with the GCSE (9-1) Maths syllabus across major exam boards—Edexcel, AQA, WJEC, OCR, and both Edexcel and Cambridge iGCSE.

In a typical lesson, I start by introducing a topic using visual aids and examples, making complex concepts clear and approachable. From there, we tackle exam questions related to the topic, with me initially guiding you before encouraging more independent problem-solving. My goal is to build your confidence and skills so you can handle exam questions on your own. Using a collaborative online whiteboard, we both actively participate in each lesson, allowing real-time feedback that makes online tutoring as effective as in-person sessions.

As exams approach, I shift the focus to past papers, helping you refine your exam technique and identify areas to improve. By going over mark schemes, we gain valuable insights, allowing us to revisit challenging topics and fill in any knowledge gaps. This approach to exam preparation has proven successful for my students, and I am excited to help you achieve your goals in maths.
